Seeing my students develop a genuine love for mathematics is what motivates me the most to contribute to the excellence in STEM teaching. Witnessing the excitement as they discover that math is not just something they learn in our classroom, but a concept that is found all around us, is truly inspiring. Their growth, both in understanding and passion for the subject, fuels my commitment to continue fostering the same curiosity and love for learning in every student I teach.
As a teacher you get to witness firsthand how instilling a love and passion for mathematics in your students makes a profound difference in their learning journey. One particular moment stands out: I watched my first graders work with manipulatives and slowly begin to grasp the concept of subtraction for the first time. The sense of pride and excitement on their faces as they made the connection was truly amazing. What was even more rewarding, was seeing one of them, who once struggled, turn and confidently show a peer how to solve the subtraction problem. It was a powerful reminder that teaching isn't about transferring knowledge, it's about empowering students to understand, solve problems, and then teach others.
Katelyinne “Kate” Green began her teaching journey 10 years ago. She is in her second year teaching kindergarten in rural Pennsylvania. Before that, she taught first through fifth grade in downeast Maine. Kate began her journey as an educational practitioner in second grade at Franklin Township Elementary School in 2015. Kate’s love of mathematics started in the fourth grade when her teacher instilled his love and passion for both learning and mathematics in his students. Whether it was long division, basic multiplication facts, or the simple addition of multi-digit numbers, he always made learning fun and meaningful. Kate regularly strives to instill this same love and passion for mathematics in her students, as well as students from kindergarten to fifth grade, whether it is teaching a whole class of students or providing interventions to those students who need extra support. Kate’s love and passion for mathematics are not only evident within her classroom, but extend throughout her school and district. Kate is routinely selected to lead professional development and mentor colleagues. Her professional expertise, especially in mathematics and literacy, is a shining beacon for those around her. Kate was recognized as the 2022 Teacher of the Year by her principal. She holds an A.S. in general studies, summa cum laude, from Allegany College of Maryland; a B.S. in early childhood and elementary education, summa cum laude, from Frostburg State University; and an M.Ed., summa cum laude, from Wilson College. She is certified to teach pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and holds certifications in the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Maine.
