I’m motivated by a passion for creating relevant, inquiry-based STEM experiences that empower students to become problem-solvers and environmental stewards. Through hands-on fieldwork and sustainability projects, I connect science to real-world impact, helping students see the relevance of their learning. I’m also driven to support other educators through mentoring and collaboration, knowing that strong STEM teaching can inspire lasting change.
As a Presidential Awardee, I hope to amplify the importance of environmental literacy, sustainability, and inquiry-based STEM learning. I’ll use this platform to advocate for access to real-world science—like water testing, microplastics research, and ecological restoration—that connects students to their communities. I’ll mentor educators through National Board and coastal environmental education to build a strong STEM network and inspire students to be changemakers for a sustainable future.
Krista Fleming has 20 years of teaching experience, including seven years at Gulf Shores High School, where she teaches Environmental Science, AP Environmental Science, and Marine Biology to grades 9–12. As Chair of the Science by the Shore Committee, she leads efforts to integrate coastal, hands-on science lessons across K–12 classrooms, connecting students to real-world environmental challenges such as oyster reef restoration, water quality monitoring, microplastics research, dune restoration, and scuba diving. Through partnerships with organizations like the Little Lagoon Preservation Society, Gulf State Park, and other community groups, her students actively participate in ecosystem restoration projects that protect and enhance local coastal environments. A passionate advocate for sustainability and experiential learning, Krista creates a student-centered classroom where inquiry and collaboration drive understanding. Her leadership emphasizes mentoring teachers and building community connections to enhance STEM education. She has presented at state and national conferences. Krista is a National Board Certified Teacher, Past President of the Alabama NBCT Network, and District Director for the Alabama Science Teachers Association. Krista earned a B.S. in Elementary Education from Indiana University, an M.S. in Curriculum and Instructional Leadership from Indiana Wesleyan University, and an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership (magna cum laude) from Arkansas State University. She holds certifications in secondary science and educational administration. Her awards include 2025 Alabama Water Watch Educator of the Year, 2024 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators, 2022 Alabama Science Teacher of the Year, and 2021 Alabama Teacher of the Year Finalist.
