What motivates you to contribute to excellence in STEM teaching?

I had excellent science teacher role models from pre-k through college. The topics and presentation choices were challenging and pulled me into wanting to learn more. This ended up influencing me to want to help others find this passion for learning about science.

What has been the most transformative moment that affirmed your impact on STEM education?

Indiana had a science initiative to focus on hands-on science for elementary through middle level grades. Classes went from being reading based to action based investigations with students developing their own questions and creating statements that summarized their findings based on data they had collected. Science became fun, challenging, collaborative, and cooperative. Other subjects were interwoven into our notebooks, and students flourished.

Using your platform as a Presidential Awardee, how do you hope to advance our nation in STEM?

I am an active member of the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers. I will support positions held by our association and also make contact with state and federal lawmakers to support positions supporting science and science education.
