This award is a reflection of a career spent among master educators who have been willing to share their expertise and insight with those around them. I have benefited from their examples. I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to participate in this process of self-reflection. It has been a learning experience and has helped improve my teaching skills. The best aspect of teaching is watching students grow and increase their confidence as mathematicians.

The official biography below was current at the time of the award.

Stacy Stoker has been an educator for 20 years. She currently teaches all subjects for fifth grade but has also taught first, fourth, and sixth grades. She has spent 19 years of her career at Red Cliffs Elementary School and the first year with Juab Middle School. In the classroom, Stacy focuses on student discourse centered on real-world mathematics and problem solving. Her students participate in engaging mathematics lessons that deepen their understanding and build connections between concepts. To strengthen family participation in their student's mathematics education, Stacy developed a workshop that involved gameplay for increasing fluency of basic mathematics facts for her school’s Family Math and Literacy Night. The workshop included supplies and a booklet of games that could be adapted for kindergarten through sixth-grade students and their families. Many families attended and the workshop was a huge success. Recently, Stacy has been serving on the Utah State Mathematics Advisory Committee. When the Common Core State Standards were introduced in 2010, Stacy helped develop and present the Common Core Academy to mathematics teachers statewide. Stacy earned a B.S. in elementary education from Utah Valley University and an M.Ed. from Southern Utah University. She is a certified elementary school teacher and has endorsements in elementary mathematics, reading, and STEM.
