I am honored and humbled to be nominated for the Presidential Award. I have had the opportunity to work with so many great educators and share my excitement about teaching mathematics with many amazing students. I am a reflective practitioner and lifelong learner, and to be given this opportunity has validated that the dedication I show to my students and learning has made an impact. I share this honor with my students, colleagues, and family members and thank them for their continued support.

Mark Bussian has been a districtwide instructional coach with the Columbus School District for the past year of his 17-year career in education. Previously, Mark had been with the Sun Prairie Area School District for 16 years, four of which were as a kindergarten and second grade teacher at Token Springs Elementary, teaching all subjects. He spent the 11 years prior as a classroom teacher at Eastside Elementary, where he taught students in kindergarten, second, and third grade. Mark is passionate about building and maintaining relationships with his students. Using each student's unique strengths he instills into each student a growth mindset. He can meet students’ needs through differentiation and using data to drive mathematics instruction within his classroom. Seeing his students grow in both social and academic ways continues to be a driving force in why he loves being an educator. Mark has served on the Wisconsin Mathematics Council board of directors since 2018. He has facilitated many mathematics professional development sessions within his school district. He has also served on his district’s mathematics steering committee. Mark earned a B.S. in elementary education from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He is certified in early childhood, elementary, and middle grades education. Additionally, he earned principal and director of instruction licenses and an M.S. Ed. from Concordia University.
