Cara Johnson has been an educator at Allen High School for seven years. She has taught 10th grade Biology and 12th grade Anatomy and Physiology. Recently, she has taken on a new role as the High School Science Instructional Specialist. In her flipped class, Cara emphasized mastery of content through student-centered investigations. In her class, students guide their own learning and develop an in-depth understanding of life sciences. Moreover, students acquire skills that enable them to be independent learners, such as time management, organization, and research tools in order to pursue their curiosity. Cara has presented her flipped mastery learning methods at numerous conferences including the Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching, and FlipCon. In her new role, Cara assists 47 high school science teachers as they plan and implement their curriculum. Cara enjoys helping other teachers determine strategies that meet all student learning styles, bolster students’ excitement for science, and develop the students’ skills to be successful in future courses. Cara earned a B.S. in nutrition from the University of Texas, a M.S. in nutrition from Texas Women’s University, and is completing her Ed.D. in educational technology and leadership from William Taft University. She is a registered dietitian and certified to teach middle school science, high school life science, and chemistry.
