The nomination for the Presidential Award is truly an honor! This award is one of the greatest recognitions I could receive in my educational career, and there are many deserving educators. This award process allowed me to reflect on my current teaching practices, develop creative lessons, and continuously think of ways to improve my students educational experience. I am grateful to my students, colleagues, and mentors that encourage me to continuously grow professionally.

Katherine “Katie” Thompson has taught high school mathematics at the Academy for the Arts, Science, and Technology for all 14 years of her teaching career. For the past three years, she taught Calculus Honors, Advanced Placement Calculus AB, and Advanced Placement Calculus BC to students in grades 11-12. Previously, she has also taught Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Precalculus courses. For the last five years, Katherine has worked to introduce and lead the aerospace engineering program as a Career and Technology Major at the school by obtaining a certification from Southern Regional Education Board Advanced Career Pathways. Katherine works to inspire students to further their STEM education through field experiences, competitions, projects, guest speakers, and more. She believes that building relationships with students is a key element of her teaching practice. Katherine has led various professional development sessions at the school and district level. She has participated in the Advanced Placement Reading for Calculus AB and BC Exams. Her dedication to students also includes other school activities, such as student council, planning the senior trip, and prom committee. Katherine earned a B.S. in biosystems engineering, with a minor in business administration, from Clemson University; an M.A.T. in secondary mathematics education from Winthrop University; and an M.Ed. in educational leadership from Coastal Carolina University. She is certified in 7-12 mathematics education, with a gifted and talented endorsement, and Advanced Placement Calculus AB and BC endorsements.
