Receiving the Presidential Award is a recognition that celebrates the countless students whose curiosity and passion caused me to think more deeply about mathematics as we explored ideas together. It also honors the many mentoring and support communities that have guided my career and challenged me to investigate powerful learning.

Ariel Beggs Tucson, AZ | 7-12, Mathematics, 2021

Ariel Beggs has been an educator for two decades. In 2004, she began working at Lawndale Community Academy in Chicago, IL, with Teach for America. In 2009, Ariel moved to Tucson, AZ, where she taught a variety of courses, including mathematics and science, to fifth through eighth graders at Imago Dei Middle School. Ariel Beggs currently works at the University of Arizona Math Department’s Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers (CRR) as a Program Coordinator. In the classroom, Ariel collaborated with students and other teachers to create a learning culture where students explored their identity, belonging, and agency as powerful mathematical thinkers and problem solvers. During her tenure at Imago Dei, Ariel helped facilitate the adoption and implementation of investigative curricula and the use of long-range vertical planning strategies. In addition to teaching, Ariel has been involved with the University of Arizona’s "Improving Mathematical Problem solving, Agency, & student-Centered instruction for K-8 Teachers and Students" Program (IMPACTS K-8) since 2017. As a partner and teacher leader with the IMPACTS K-8 Program, she benefited from valuable mentorship that shaped her vision and goals as a mathematics educator. During her time as a teacher leader, Ariel collaborated with program directors and other teacher leaders across the state to design and facilitate workshops focused on deepening teachers’ mathematical understanding and promoting hands-on, student-centered learning. Ariel earned a B.A. in philosophy from Wheaton College and an M.A.T. from Dominican University. She is certified in kindergarten through eighth grade elementary education.
