The official biography below was current at the time of the award.
Steven King, a 26-year teacher, has been the kindergarten through fifth grade Science Specialist at Whit Davis Elementary School for the past nine years. Originally a middle school teacher, Steven became passionate about fostering an early interest and love for science, creating a STEAM lab where the curriculum comes to life with inquiry-based investigations and experiments. Students explore all aspects of science in his award-winning laboratory. His commitment to engaging students in real-world science experiences and providing them with the latest scientific and technological equipment is evident in the annual awarding of multiple mini-grants to fund challenging and creative lessons in his laboratory. As a result, students have greater access to technology and to innovative projects such as building kaleidoscopes, making and maintaining habitats, extensive microbiology explorations, crime-scene investigation labs, chemistry experiments, and model rocketry. Steven has led professional development at conferences on the local, regional, and state levels as a member of the Georgia Science Teachers Association. Steven earned a B.S. in middle grades education at the University of Georgia, and both a M.A. in elementary education and an Ed.S. in curriculum and instruction from Piedmont College. He is certified to teach all subjects kindergarten through eighth grade and gifted.
