The Presidential Award validates the effort and commitment educators put forth to ensure our students are receiving equitable and quality education in mathematics and science. This award is both humbling and empowering—it represents the sacrifices of my family, the hard work of my students, and the potential we as educators have to make a difference in shaping our future mathematicians.

Silvia Miranda Clovis, NM | K-6, Mathematics, 2020

Silvia Miranda has been an educator for over 14 years and is the kindergarten through second grade Reading Specialist at Mesa and James Bickley Elementary Schools. She previously taught fourth grade for eight years at Mesa Elementary and has also taught kindergarten, first, and second grades at Lockwood, La Casita, Wilson, and Bella Vista Elementary Schools. Silvia has high standards for success for herself and her students, employing Whole Brain strategies, a growth mindset philosophy, interest-based learning, and data-driven instruction. She is a Khan Academy Ambassador and a Statistics in our Schools Ambassador. Silvia has served as a Clovis Municipal Schools Teacher Leader since 2018, was a state ambassador for the NM Teacher Leader Network for two years, and served on the state Secretary’s Teacher Advisory. She is a strong advocate for student and teacher voices and has served on countless committees and task forces to ensure these voices are heard. She recently served on state task forces for school re-entry and for the development of the new teacher evaluation system for New Mexico, and she often contributes to the state's Teach Plus network. Silvia is a 2020 NSTA Teacher Awards finalist, a 2018 Milken Educator Award recipient, was Clovis Teacher of the Year in 2018, and was a NM Teacher of the Year finalist. She has been awarded many grants for STEM education. Silvia has a B.A., summa cum laude, in elementary education from Eastern New Mexico University and an M.S., summa cum laude, in education literacy from Wayland Baptist University. She is a National Board Certified Teacher in early and middle childhood literacy and is certified in kindergarten through eighth grade elementary education with an endorsement in bilingual education.
