The Presidential Award has been an opportunity to inspire and celebrate my teaching career. I am honored and fortunate to have chosen such a rewarding profession. My inspiration is to continue to use a growth mindset, build innovative lessons, and make learning memorable. My gratitude goes to the students and colleagues who have made such an impact and taught me so much throughout the years. The recognition through this award is so humbling and I share it with all who have helped me grow.

Kristen “Kristy” Butler has been an educator for 16 years and has spent the last three years teaching sixth grade mathematics at Medlin Middle School. Prior to that, she taught mathematics at Travis Middle School for 10 years where she served two years as a mathematics instructional coach and interventionist. The first three years of Kristy’s teaching career were spent at Tannahill Intermediate School. Building relationships with students and creating innovative, technology-driven lessons is where Kristy stands out. She has a growth mindset and is constantly looking for ways to engage and relate to her students. Her role as a Pear Deck Regional Coach has strengthened her passion for using technology in her classroom. She presents teaching practices at campus and district conferences because she wants to be the best for her students and to inspire others to do the same. She has a deep love for teaching and learning. Kristy’s campus involvement goes beyond the classroom. She serves on the Campus Improvement, Character Council, and Teacher Appreciation Committees. Kristy has mentored student teachers and is the New Teacher Mentor Coordinator. Kristy spent many years writing curriculum and serving as Mathematics Department Chair. Kristy has served as a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She also completed the Teaching Trust Ed Fellows Leadership Program. Kristy has a B.S. in middle school mathematics education from Texas Christian University and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction in mathematics from the University of Texas at Arlington. She is certified in mathematics education and English as a second language.
