Denise Carlson taught at Gilbert Elementary School at the time of the award. During her 20-year tenure at Gilbert, she taught first and third grades. After leaving Gilbert Schools, she was employed as a mathematics curriculum lead at Heartland Area Education Agency and retired from there in 2016. After retiring, Denise returned to Gilbert to work as a substitute teacher and teacher associate. Currently, she is employed as a part-time lecturer in the School of Education at Iowa State University. Denise earned a B.S. from Iowa State University, and later an M.S. from Drake University. She has also earned an Online Educator Certificate from Drake. Denise is honored to have been awarded the Milken Educator Award and the PAEMST.
