I have had the chance to participate in some phenomenal professional development opportunities in my career, and time and again I’ve found that the educators who’ve planned and delivered these sessions were previous recipients of the award. I’ve come to associate Presidential Award winners with the gold standard of mathematics teaching. The previous PAEMST award winners I’ve met are the epitome of reflective, energetic, and curious educators who are always looking to improve their practice.

William Stafford Washington, DC | 7-12, Mathematics, 2019

William "Will" Stafford teaches high school mathematics at E.L. Haynes Public Charter School. This is Will's 12th year teaching and his ninth at E.L. Haynes, where he was part of the founding high school team. He serves as Department Chair. He previously taught at Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School for three years. Will currently teaches 9th-12th grade students in Algebra 2 and Advanced Placement Calculus. Will enjoys creating a welcoming and challenging classroom environment for students to develop as mathematicians. In his classroom, Will uses research-based structures for collaboration that engage students and increase the transfer of knowledge between them as they solve problems. Will serves as a master teacher with Math for America DC. As part of the Math for America community, he leads professional development on incorporating new research into the classroom. Will has previously served on the staff of the Park City Math Institute. Will has presented at multiple National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conferences on structures for creating engagement for all students. At E.L. Haynes, Will coaches boys varsity soccer and girls varsity lacrosse. Will holds a B.S. in mathematics from Haverford College and a M.A. in secondary mathematics education from American University. He was a recipient of Teach For America DC’s Edith Tatel award for excellence in secondary teaching. He is a National Board Certified Teacher.
