After winning the award, when I shared the news with my students, one of my not-so-motivated students told me, "You care for me more than I care for myself and you are always approachable." That is my teaching belief.

Swati Sharma began her teaching career in 1972. She taught mathematics at Manchester Memorial High School in Manchester, New Hampshire, at the time she received the Presidential Award and is where she continued to teach for 10 years after receipt of the award. Swati received several awards during her career including the Dartmouth Prize for Exceptional Elementary and Secondary School Teaching; Outstanding Teacher by the Memorial High School National Honor Society; Semi-finalist for New Hampshire Teacher of the Year for two consecutive years; Educator of the Year by the group “Excellence in Education;” and the 1998 Distinguished Teacher by Rochester Institute of Technology. She was also an attendee of the Fulbright Memorial Fund. Swati earned an M.S. in mathematics from Northeastern University in Boston and an M.S. in pure mathematics from Calcutta University in Calcutta, India.
