The Presidential Award changed my life for the better, both personally and professionally. It provided opportunities I would otherwise not have had. I will forever be grateful to those who nominated me for the award and those who mentored me throughout my career.
Elizabeth "Liz" Marquez recently retired from Educational Testing Service (ETS) where she used her expertise in mathematics education to lead research projects, develop innovation assessments for students and teachers, and write and deliver professional development materials to mathematics teachers across the country. Much of her work focused on improving mathematics education for traditionally underserved students. Prior to joining ETS, Liz taught mathematics for 30 years in grades 7-12, mentoring many teachers and teacher interns from Princeton University and Rutgers University. In addition to receiving the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 1992 while teaching mathematics at North Brunswick Township High School in New Jersey, Liz received the Princeton University Prize for Distinguished Secondary School Teaching. Her classroom was featured in films on the art of teaching and on standards-based instruction. She has co-authored articles, research papers, and books on teaching, learning, and assessment in mathematics education. Liz received her B.A. in mathematics from Montclair State and her M.A. in mathematics from Central Missouri State. She is certified as a mathematics teacher in grades 7-12 and as a supervisor of mathematics. She has served on the National Selection Committee for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
