To me the Presidential Award means confirmation at the highest level that my efforts in the classroom and professional arenas are of value to others. I would be grateful to have my work in helping students gain a working knowledge of science for life recognized by the science education community and beyond.

Joanna Hubbard Anchorage, AK | 7-12, Science, 2011

Joanna Hubbard has taught Integrated Science 8 at Nicholas J. Begich Middle School in the Anchorage School District for the last 2 years. Previously, she provided science curriculum and instructional support to the district as a Science Teacher Expert for 7 years. Joanna also taught seventh grade science for 5 years at Hanshew Middle School in Anchorage. Joanna led a district-wide effort to integrate science notebook use into science kit training. She helped develop the award-winning Sea Train field trip, taking 400 students per day on an excursion focused on energy, and she was the lead on curriculum development. Joanna has been a presenter on a wide range of topics at national science teachers’ conventions. She is a faculty member of the National Science Resource Center’s Strategic Planning Institute. Joanna was an outreach educator in Antarctica with the Antarctic Drilling program and is on the planning committee of Polar Educators International. She also worked with a field science team on the Antarctic Peninsula. Joanna has an A.B. in environmental and evolutionary biology from Dartmouth College and an M.S. in science education from Montana State University at Bozeman. She completed her teacher certification courses at Dartmouth College and is certified in kindergarten through eighth grade in Alaska.
