The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is one of the highest honors for teachers of mathematics in Puerto Rico. For me, it is an excellent opportunity to represent the University of Puerto Rico Secondary School, Río Piedras Campus.
The official biography below was current at the time of the award.
Jaime W. Abreu Ramos has been an educator for 15 years at the University of Puerto Rico Secondary School, Río Piedras Campus. He teaches 9th and 10th grade mathematics. He also implements the SMART Board technology at the school. Jaime’s Robotics Club engages students in exciting activities related to mathematics and science. Jaime’s activities outside the classroom include mentoring (from August to December 2011, he collaborated with a graduate student from the University of Wisconsin at Madison to help her attain a Ph.D.). His research interests include incorporating the use of electronic portfolios to assess students with and without disabilities. (Google Sites were used to create students' electronic portfolios.) Jaime has participated in National Science Foundation professional development in creating mathematics content, K-12, using manipulatives, graphics calculators, dynamic geometry software, and SMART Board technology for master mathematics teachers.
