Arlene Hayman has taught at Paradise Professional Development School for 13 years as a first and second grade teacher. She was awarded the New Teacher of the Year Award for Primary Grades in the Clark County School District in 1998. As her school’s Science Site Leader, Arlene presented workshops and led a science book club and Critical Friends Group, an inquiry-based professional development group. From a collaborative study, she accelerated student achievement with science-oriented museum literacy projects. For Clark County School District’s Science Cadre, Arlene presented workshops to new teachers and to Science Site Leaders. Following an Earth Science Leadership Training in Houston, she presented an Earth Systems workshop to Science Site Leaders. Arlene was elementary representative and is president-elect for the Southern Nevada Science Teachers’ Association. She received a $250 grant for a trout-release field trip and, in 2008, received the Science Teacher of the Year award. Arlene served on the Nevada Standards Setting Committee for Science, which met last year in Reno, NV. Arlene has a B.Ed. with distinction from the University of Hawai’i and an M.Ed. from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She is certified in kindergarten through eighth grade.
