Teaching science is my passion and this award recognizes my deep commitment to providing quality, hands-on, inquiry-based science education for all my students. Svea Anderson Tucson, AZ | K-6, Science, 2018

Svea Anderson has been an educator for 20 years and has spent the last 14 teaching at Agua Caliente Elementary School. Svea has taught first through seventh grade and currently teaches sixth grade science, mathematics, and reading. She previously taught at Studley Elementary in Attleboro, MA, for six years. Svea partners with Pima County Natural Resources, conducting essential citizen science at Agua Caliente Park. In 2018, she was chosen as a PolarTREC Educator and traveled to the Arctic to conduct research. In 2019, she was selected for a Grovesnor Teacher Fellowship with National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions. Svea strives to bring these types of experiences back to her students, connecting real-time science with her engaged learners. Svea coaches the Junior High LEGO Robotics team and a Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) club. Recently, her team competed in the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) ROV Competition and won first place. She also teaches an afterschool robotics club. Svea has served as her district's STEM Coordinator for two years. She is the lead ambassador for a collaboration between the Arizona Science Teacher's Association and the Arizona Department of Education. She leads professional development across her district and state. Svea earned a M.Ed. from Antioch New England University and is certified in kindergarten through eighth grade education.
