It is a tremendous honor to receive the Presidential Award and it is a validation of the time and energy it takes to create rigorous and engaging activities that help students to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of mathematics. Receiving this award was only possible because of the support of my wonderful family, amazing colleagues and supportive administration. It encourages me to keep learning and growing and to share my passion with my students and fellow educators.

The official biography below was current at the time of the award.

Susan "Sue" Darden has been an educator for 28 years. For the past 11 years, she has been teaching sixth grade mathematics and history at Galileo STEM Academy. Previously she taught sixth grade mathematics at Meridian Middle School. Sue wants her students to enjoy learning and using mathematics, and also develop their confidence, skills, and abilities. To do this, she uses engaging group activities and the use of technology to provide differentiated instruction to ensure all students are challenged at the appropriate level. Perseverance is a trait she fosters in her students as they work on critical thinking skills and develop strong mathematical practices. Sue has presented at several district and state conferences on mathematical strategies, formative assessments, and using technology to differentiate instruction. She has worked with the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing at the University of California Los Angeles in order to align resources for the Smarter Balanced Consortium. Sue serves on the board for the Idaho Council of Teachers of Mathematics and has been the recipient of thousands of dollars in grants to provide technology for her classroom. Sue earned a B.S., cum laude, in elementary education from the University of Idaho and a M.S. in curriculum and instruction from Long Island University.
